Along with the changing of the leaves and sweater weather comes the pumpkin spice craze. Pumpkin spice is a staple for fall coffee shops, and it is highly anticipated by people across the country. Hordes of people from all over will be rushing to get in the Starbucks line as soon as they see that pumpkin spice has made its long awaited return. I, for one, am not in favor of the pumpkin spice hype.
The first time I tasted the famous Starbucks pumpkin spice iced latte, I was thoroughly disappointed. The nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger flavoring is strongly overpowering and really ruins the taste of coffee that belongs in a latte. Not to mention that one pumpkin spice iced latte has enough calories to almost be considered a meal. Meghan Hill ‘18 is an avid coffee drinker and committed customer of Starbucks. But even she agrees, saying “It just ruins the true taste of coffee.” Sarah Burbridge ‘18, another regular customer of Starbucks, chimed in about the taste, claiming “There’s nothing pumpkin about it.”
Every season has its trends. Winter has ugly Christmas sweaters, spring has April showers and May flowers, summer has hot weather and beach days, and the fall has pumpkin spice. That can often be seen as the reason why it is so popular, because it comes around only once a year for a limited time. “It is one of those seasonal things, but it is overrated,” teacher Victoria Milette said when asked about why pumpkin spice is so popular.
Don’t get me wrong, if you do like pumpkin spice, I have nothing against you. I respect your opinion. What I can’t fathom is why it is so popular and how people can’t get sick of it after a while. Pumpkin spice is everywhere now: candles, coffee, cookies and even protein powder! One day, another fall coffee trend will come along, and pumpkin spice will be gone. I can’t wait for that day.
