Jake Laborde ‘22 Graduate Goes Up for A Spike In the NHIAA Division 1 Boys Volleyball Championship

Men’s Volleyball

The Men’s Volleyball team gears up for the season as their first game approaches at home on Apr 10, 2023, vs. Goffstown. The men were very successful last year and ended the season winning the 2022 State Championship vs. Windham. Last year, they were led by Jake Laborde ‘22, Daniel Sattler ‘22, Noah Sinclair ‘22, and Aidan Norris ‘23.

Aidan Norris, who recently committed to Lasell University, mentioned he is really looking forward to a great season. He looks forward to the bond that the group will form. He mentions that the team is one of the most fun if not the most fun team that he has ever been a part of.

“The team is looking good, strong on the court, and friends off the court,” Norris said. “Obviously we have graduated Jake, Dan, and Noah, but we have people stepping up in new positions and with the jamboree last weekend we see who can fill those positions.”

“I have to say the finals was my favorite moment. Winning was huge, but the path to getting there and how hard everyone worked during and before that match is admirable,” said Norris.

Martin Bergeron ‘23, was another piece of HB’s prolific season last year. He is a defensive specialist and is excited about what this season will bring. Bergeron understands the significance of losing three key seniors; however, he believes the seniority combined with promising underclassmen will pick up where last year’s team left off.

“We graduated three, so it’s still mostly the same team and we know each other well. Even though it’s a different team it’s still the same [vibe],” Bergeron said. “We still have a lot of depth and young stars like Ethan Norris and plenty of seniority on the team.”

Winning the state championship is obviously something any high school athlete will never forget but it is also the journey that can be just as memorable.

“The finals were definitely the most memorable moments of the season,” said Bergeron. “But that’s not to say that there weren’t other moments that I will never forget.”

First-year volleyball player Kyle Sanborn ‘24 has a different perspective than both Norris and Bergeron as he played lacrosse his previous two spring seasons in high school. Watching rather than playing, Sanborn ‘24 provides a perspective from the outside, looking in on the past few years along with being a part of the team this year. Success is intriguing, but the community of the team is what attracts Sanborn and others to both this year’s and last year’s teams.

“The team has a really good dynamic, good kids, and a good team makeup,” said Sandborn. “Our leaders are very important and it [the team] feels like its own community. I’m personally excited for the opportunity to make a deep playoff push with this team after coming up short in hockey.”

Volleyball’s plethora of success last year has not only their division but also the rest of HB and its spring sports on the watch for what’s to come. HB looks to continue its success in its aforementioned opening game against Goffstown on April 10th. Beginning a season and journey that could likely end with HB on top once again as they seek yet another championship.
