The winter can be a tough time for style. It’s easy for high schoolers to just roll out of bed and throw on some sweatpants, a sweatshirt, and some ratty, old sneakers. Changing weather and icy conditions prohibit certain outfits. With the amount of snow and frigid temperatures that we often have in New England, sneakers and a sweatshirt might not be too practical. If you really want to elevate your style, there are some simple tips that you can follow. Some simple outfit combinations will keep you on top of the style game.

Start by getting a coat. Preferably a coat that will keep you warm during the harsh winter weather. The wool double breasted pea coat is the perfect option. It keeps you warm and the double buttons keep the coat very form fitting. A pea coat with a big collar is a good option. The collar will keep you warm even during the coldest days. Nick White ‘17, though, says his favorite coat to wear in the winter is “ the heavy duty, all black, good old North Face.” The pea cot will also pair well with this next winter essential.

A scarf is a perfect piece to keep the neck warm and add a pop of style to your outfit. It is a perfect option that will match a pea coat as well, and is very practical. On a cold day just throw on a scarf and it will compliment any outfit.

The next men’s winter essential is a vest. A lightweight vest is the perfect option for layering in the winter. The vest may not be the best thing to wear outside, but it is a nice addition to an outfit. The perfect color for a vest would be a navy blue or black because these colors can match with everything. A bold color vest such as a red or orange vest sticks out but isn’t very practical when it comes to matching. Not everyone likes vests, though; Drew Gillis 17’ says his favorite pieces of clothing to wear in the winter are Patagonia sweaters. “Easy. There’s a reason they call it ‘The better sweater.’”

When the snow starts to fall, the best footwear is a good pair of boots, preferably ones that are waterproof. I recommend a chelsea boot that is waterproof. This boot is very stylish and it usually comes in leather or a suede. They can be dressed up or down and worn with jeans or chinos.

Layering is the best way to stay warm. Will Cantella ‘17 says, “Layering is good only if it is a long sleeve shirt a sweater and a wind breaker.” If you get too hot you can take off a layer and if you get cold you can add a layer. One of the best pieces of clothing for layering is a v-neck sweater. Any color is great because you can match them with plenty of undershirts. Also wearing a vest on top of everything will help with layering and complete the look.

If you take these winter essentials and apply them to your wardrobe, it will transform your winter style from not caring to people noticing what you wear.
