It’s no secret that the Hollis Brookline baseball team is a force to be reckoned with this year. The past seasons have not treated the baseball team kindly; however, this year, they are comprised of the former middle school Tri-County Champions, who are now juniors and seniors, making this a season to look out for. With baseball season on the fast ride, it’s important to look at the stars that shape the Hollis Brookline High School team.

Another great addition to the baseball games this year is the introduction of walk-on songs for each player. Songs are chosen by individual baseball players, and no explicit songs are allowed (obviously).  “It gives the players more energy when they are up to bat. I think it improves the team as a whole,” says a new walk-up song disc jockey, Evan Simonds ‘19.

Max Mello ‘19 is a Skidmore College commit. Mello is very vocal at HB, and is always ready to speak up when he needs to. Mello stars as HB’s resident second baseman and has a batting average of .500,  “I believe this will be a great season with a good chance for us to take the ‘ship,” said Mello.

Joe Messina ‘19, one of HB’s top pitchers, has talent on and off the field. Messina also stars in Guitar Night and is committed to Berkeley School of Music in Boston, MA. Messina’s batting average last year was .475 and his pitching skills were impeccable. Messina is one of the honorary team captains, creating a strong sense of togetherness and brotherhood for his fellow teammates. This year he intends to “…shake up the competition,” said Messina.

Kyle Hsu ’19 is another HB hotshot to look out for. He plays well on the team, having played with Mello and Messina from early on in his childhood years. These three build a chemistry unmatched in every other school.

Keep your eyes peeled for the HB baseball team as they continue their amazing run of the season. They currently stand at 5-1 on the season and hope to continue the grind. Catch their next home game on May 8 vs. Coe-Brown Northwood at 4pm.
