Star runner, star teacher, or both? Yolanda Flamino, one of this year’s newest editions to the Science department, ran in the 2008 Olympic Trials for the marathon event. As a student in Connecticut, Flamino started running cross country in the eighth grade. When high school started, the multi-sport athlete, Flamino, had to make the difficult decision between soccer and cross country. She chose cross country, and has not looked back since.

Flamino went on to run cross country at Trinity College.  After college she joined a training group, with the hopes of qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.  The road to trials was a stressful one she said, “You’ll have bad days, and good days, but every time you run and test your body, it’s beneficial”. For Flamino, who mentioned her passion for setting goals, and achieving them, teaching chemistry is a great alternative to the pressure-filled life of an athlete. She likens her running strategies to her teaching strategies.

In addition to teaching, Flamino will also be serving as the school’s Indoor Track coach. With a lot of experience on her side, with coaching jobs at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Smith College, and more, Flamino should have no problem at HB.
