The romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You, directed by Gil Junger, is loosely-based on Shakspere’sThe Taming of the Shrew. The movie takes place in a suburban neighborhood in Seattle where the sisters Kat (Julia Stiles) and Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik) live with their overbearing doctor father who forbids them from dating in the fear that they’d come home “knocked up.”
While Bianca is the queen of popularity and beauty, who has all the boys chase after her such as Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan), a self-obsessed, greased- back hair, popular and hot boy at her school. Cameron James (Joseph Gorden-Levitt) aims for the same goal as Joey: to be with Bianca. Cameron lacks a lot of what Joey has to offer such as popularity, looks, and confidence but with his sweet heart, caring acts such as learning French to tutor Bianca, it makes the decision much harder for Bianca.
Kat is an angry feminist who thinks men are a waste of time and are only there to please a woman’s needs, which she could do all on her own. Kat and Bianca’s father comes up with the rule that Bianca can’t date until Kat does, Bianca celebrates telling her best friend Chastity (Gabrielle Union) who ends up telling the whole school. When the news reaches Joey and Cameron they both try to find a perfect match for Kat. Cameron and his nerdy friend Michael (David Krumholtz) approach Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) with a deal to start taking out Kat with the reward of money. Patrick is known as the rebel of the school; smoking cigarettes during class and rumored to have eaten an alive duck, beak to tail.
When Patrick takes out Kat, spending one on one time with her he starts to gain genuine feelings, understanding why she is such a strong headed woman and how her opinions make out who she is. While Patrick falls for Kat, Kat starts to realize that Patrick is more than a rebel he is known to be.
