In 2024, the Hollis Brookline High School (HBHS) Varsity Soccer team is undergoing pretty significant changes. A new coach who focuses on physical conditioning has been introduced. The team has introduced rigorous fitness requirements to ensure players are highly prepared. HBHS soccer is now more focused on endurance and physical capability.
At the center of these changes is a focus on fitness, which has reduced the varsity roster size. Jackson Scherer, one of the team’s goalies, explained the reason behind the new approach. “This season, we wanted to focus on a small yet effective roster, so we conditioned our varsity players. We want them to be able to play full games without exhaustion, allowing us to have a smaller varsity team,” he said.
The new fitness requirements aim to ensure each player can last the entire game without fatigue, creating a more efficient and dynamic team.
Varsity players must achieve these benchmarks: run two miles in under 12 minutes and 20 seconds, complete 50 pushups and perform 50 sit-ups. These requirements are there to push the players to their limits. “Varsity soccer is pretty solid this year,” said Jamie, a JV player, reflecting on the team’s improved fitness.
The effects of the new training regiment are evident on the field. “Our team has become much more athletic, and we can outpace almost every team we play against. We’ve seen huge improvements to last year,” said Scherer. John, a varsity player, explained that you have to have a strong mindset. “Attitude is a big part of determining whether you are on the team or not,” he said.
The team’s increased speed and endurance have given them an edge over their competitors. Even though the roster is smaller, the skill on the field is excellent.
As the 2024 season progresses, the full impact of these changes will continue to unfold. For now, the team’s increased athleticism is a key to its early success. While the coach’s fitness-focused approach may be demanding, it has positioned the team to be more competitive than in previous years.
