The Chess Club at Hollis Brookline High School is the perfect spot for students to relax, sharpen their skills and have some fun over a game of chess—whether you’re a pro or just starting out.
Chess Club was first started by Anthony Lanzone, a senior at Hollis Brookline High School. The club meets every week right after school in room 372, running until 3:30. The club features an inclusive environment, and members are always eager to learn and teach others about the game they enjoy.
Lanzone is grateful for the experience and feels that it has given him valuable skills. “I wanted to learn how to bring people together and start a community from the ground up; it was only me at the start,” said Lanzone ‘25.
Senior Caden Bruseo, while not in the chess club, is one of the many chess enthusiasts at Hollis Brookline High School who has played against Anthony himself.
“I had one positive experience when Anthony Lanzone challenged me to a game of chess where he assumed I would be an incredibly easy opponent. However, despite my small knowledge of chess, I managed to do just the right combination of moves to wind Anthony up in a checkmate position and won the game in a most dominant fashion,” said Bruseo ‘25.
Engineering teacher Devin Fauteux hosts the club in his room and does so due to the learning benefits that come along with the fun and connection. “It’s good to practice anything because it makes you better long term,” said Fauteux.
While the purpose of a chess club is centered around the game of chess, it can also be a place to socialize. “My favorite part of chess club is knowing that we have an environment where we can all laugh together, have fun, and just have a good time,” said Lanzone.
The chess club has a unique history. English teacher Victoria Flaherty used to be the advisor; however, due to the time commitment, she was unable to keep running the club. This led to Fauteux making the decision to take on the club as he had previously had a board games club and wanted to combine the two together.
Chess Club is a welcoming place for anyone at Hollis Brookline High to enjoy the game, learn new strategies and connect with others—whether you’re a seasoned player or just looking for a fun way to unwind.
