Lightless classes were interrupted last Wednesday by the sound of song, wafting down pitch-black hallways and stirring interest in classrooms with no power whatsoever.

Intrigued teachers led packs of students to the source of the noise, stumbling across hallways, tumbling down stairs, and eventually finding their way to the auditorium.

Ushers distributed and lit candles for students and staff as they filed into the standing-room-only auditorium, where atop the stage, a line of choir students led a rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “In The Light”. One by one, hundreds of voices joined them, ringing out through the blackness.

Choir director Bassa Vibrata said, “Actually, it was the kids who wanted to do it. So we opened the doors and let our mellifluous songs roll out through the hallways.”

“Hit The Lights” by Jay Sean

“My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark” by Fall Out Boy

And finally, the choir led Hollis-Brookline High School through a haunting rendition of “Silent Night”.

“It was really cool,” said Lumina Bright, ‘16. “They all sounded good and nobody dropped their candles.”

The fire chief could not be reached for comment.

The lights came back on as students finished the final song, in what seemed for many like a call from the Heavens in appreciation of their vigil.

Classes resumed normally.
