Marcelle Disco is a name that is never spoken without great things being said. She is beyond involved at Hollis Brookline High School. If you need someone to take pictures for senior night, she’ll bring her camera. If your class needs help with fundraising for events like prom, she’ll make sure you meet the goal. And even if it isn’t your favorite lunch of the day, she’ll be there making sure you leave with a smile on your face. Most importantly, with two kids in school and one graduated, she has been fortunate enough to watch the people she has known since kindergarten graduate and become adults.
While her contributions to school events and the emotional support she offers students are widely recognized, her significant, collaborative role in the cafeteria is less prominent. “On a daily basis, we use kitchen equipment such as ovens, warmers, and dishwashers. We also need to maintain cleanliness and sanitation in the kitchen,” said Mrs. Disco.
Everybody puts in effort to provide nutritious meals each day. Most of the staff in the cafeteria have been working together for quite some time now. Everybody is always friendly to the students, making sure positivity spreads. They decorate the room and get dressed up for game days, Halloween, Christmas, you name it!
When asked what sparked her decision to start at the school, her answer was clear and purposeful. “I decided to start wor
king at the school because I like the hours, which give me the opportunity to attend and watch my girls’ sporting events,” Mrs. Disco explained. Being in proximity to them also allows her to be there if they need anything; getting to see them and their friends grow up is a bonus.
Her dedication extends beyond the kitchen, as she prioritizes attending her daughters’ sporting events to support them just as passionately. “I enjoy taking pictures at the sporting events my girls have been a part of. For instance, softball, field hockey, soccer, basketball, and track. I share these pictures with each of the sports teams, and we enjoy looking back at all the pictures over the years,” she states. Rain or shine, she will be the biggest cheerleader for the team with her whole heart.
Being able to be there for your kids and see them interact in social settings with kids you’ve known since kindergarten is a gift. When asked what it was like to experience that firsthand, Mrs. Disco said, “I am so happy to see my girls and their friends grow up and to see them be more independent. I cherish the precious time with them, and the memories we have created will last a lifetime.”
It is a rollercoaster filled with many emotions. Seeing all of the milestones her daughters and close friends have achieved makes her beyond proud. These sentiments are echoed by many students, reinforcing how Mrs. Disco’s approachability and kindness create a welcoming atmosphere: “Mrs. Disco is someone I’ve known since I was very little. Growing up, she always welcomed all of the kids to her house. It is nice to see a familiar face in the school staff. I love seeing Mrs. Disco at lunch and catching up with her. She is nothing but sweet and friendly,” said Quinn Hardy.
Her youngest daughter, Samantha Disco, shares: “Getting to see my mom every day truly lightens my mood; she never fails to make my day better or give me a much-needed laugh. She is always there for me through both my highs and my lows, offering constant support and comfort. I look forward to seeing her at lunch and sharing how my day is going. She is the best mom I could ever ask for.. her presence brings me joy and makes every day better”. It isn’t always the case that kids love to see their parents in social settings, but in this case, Mrs. Disco is a parent her kids and others enjoy seeing during your school day.
As the end of this school year approaches rather quickly, Mrs. Disco will be there on June 6 for another of her kids’ graduations. Eager to flip the page, waiting to
see what the next chapter holds, there are still moments that Mrs. Disco isn’t looking forward to saying goodbye to: “I will miss seeing my graduating senior and the entire senior class. I will miss our chats each day in the cafeteria”.
With one last message, Mrs. Disco shares, “I know each of these kids will do amazing things in their next journey as they start a new chapter.”
