Friday, October 31st, Hollis Brookline High School students and staff, and the Hollis Brookline community, got ready for Halloween!
All sorts of tricks and treats awaited our community here at HBHS, and our students and staff knew all the best ways to get the most candy. Gavin Turcotte, a HBHS senior (class of 26), says that the best method is finding a house that leaves a big candy bowl out, so he can take it all for himself. Although cruel to the little trick-or-treaters, Turcotte says “I only did it once, but it is the best method.”
Many staff members planned to get involved that Friday with their own costumes, and students are just dying to know what they plan on being, even Victoria Flaherty, an HBHS English teacher, says “This is a big question.”
Flaherty and other members of the English department, and Christina Ellis from the social studies department, were planning on being the heroic crew from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Even at home, HBHS teachers were excited to dress their little ones. Flaherty and her family decided on a Bear in the Big Blue House theme, and made it known it was more of a last minute decision, “I usually have it more locked down than that.” However, even though it is last minute, she’s excited to start the Halloween festivities with her two kids.
There is a clear difference between staff values, and student values when it comes to favored Halloween activities. Hunter Sorrell, an HBHS freshman, says that eating candy is his favorite activity, especially Snickers, which he says is his favorite candy. On the other hand, Flaherty says that she now has a five year old son who gets really into decorating the house, so that has become her favorite activity.
Favorite candy is always one of the biggest questions around Halloween, and HBHS students and staff are very passionate about their opinions on candy. Flaherty says that her favorite is Twix: “It is perfect and I will take no notes.” Turcotte said that he favors Tootsie Rolls, and has always been a fan. This candy brings him nostalgia, and makes him excited about Halloween.
Speaking of nostalgia, looking back at costumes one might have worn when they were a child, is always a joy to explore. It brings back memories of favorite characters, or animals, and the community here at HBHS has had some great ones. Turcotte says he remembers a picture of him with his grandmother on Halloween, in a taco costume, “I’m just a giant taco, and it’s sick.”
Sorrell recalls a costume he had been excited for months about, before Halloween, when he was Iron man.
Overall, HBHS is very excited for this coming Halloween, and has a lot in store to give you a fright.
